Elms Students Excel

Heart & Sole is Girls on the Run's Middle School program that meets the unique needs of girls in 6th-8th grade. The Elms Middle School team completed a full year when the girls participated in a celebratory Girls on the Run 5K event at the end of the program this spring. The program considers the whole girl - body, brain, heart, spirit and social connection - in a positive, structured space where girls can learn about themselves, explore new ideas, cultivate empathy and strengthen connections. Running is incorporated into each lesson to encourage physical wellness and teach life skills such as team building, creating a support system, standing up for themselves and others and decision making.  Under the leadership of parent volunteer Annette Culp, the team will be back together for the 2018-2019 school year.  Elms Middle School students are welcome to join the team.

Grace Advent '19, Abigail Cox 19, and Abby Kushner-Benson '19 and their art pieces were regional winners in the Governor's Art competition, and went on to compete at the state level in Columbus.

Elms students Lisa and Maria Thomas, along with friend Nikhita Prasad, participated in the ProjectCSGIRLS Competition, the oldest and largest computer science competition for Middle School girls.  The team was selected as a national finalist and they attended the National Gala in Washington, DC, in June.  ProjectCSGIRLS is a nonprofit organization working to cultivate a love for technology and computer science in girls and encourage them to pursue their interests and careers in these fields.

Tatum Arico placed 12th in the Middle School PenOhio State Tournament.  Grace Hamilton '20 placed 5th in the High School PenOhio State Tournament.

Grace Advent '19 and Erin Nagle '19 completed the year-long Junior Leadership Akron program, which provides monthly leadership and community exposure to high school juniors from both public and private schools in the great Akron area.  Through a nine-month curriculum of community-based experiences, participants become familiar with current issues, community and natural resources and other factors influencing Akron's future.
