Nouvelle Stubbs Gonzalo, Esq. '01: Across Borders and Conversations

For Nouvelle L. Gonzalo, Esq. ‘01, leadership has never been confined to a single place.

It moves across borders.
It takes shape in conversations.
It begins with a willingness to listen.

Long before she became an international corporate attorney, a speaker, and the founder of her own law firm, that instinct was already forming.

It began at Our Lady of the Elms School.

An Education That Opened Doors

From her earliest years at Our Lady of the Elms School, Nouvelle was surrounded by a community that paid attention.

Teachers recognized her curiosity. They saw her interest in history, in global issues, and in the law. And when they saw potential, they acted on it.

During her junior year, Sr. Fabian, a social studies teacher, recognized an opportunity that aligned with Nouvelle’s interests. With the support of Sr. Maura and her family, Nouvelle was encouraged to apply to serve as a U.S. Congressional Page in the House of Representatives.

It was not a typical path for a high school student.

It was an invitation into something larger.

That experience gave her early exposure to leadership, policy, and the complexity of decision-making at the national level. More importantly, it showed her that she belonged in those spaces.

At the Elms, opportunities are not simply offered.

They are created.

Learning to Lead with Awareness

While her academic path was taking shape, Nouvelle was also learning something less visible but just as important.

She was learning how to lead with awareness.

She remembers noticing classmates who were sometimes left out or overlooked. Those moments stayed with her. They shaped her understanding of leadership, not as authority, but as responsibility.

To include.
To encourage.
To acknowledge others.

Today, those same instincts guide her work.

As a leader, she asks questions that shift conversations:

Who should be in this room?
Who will be impacted by this decision?

They are not always easy questions. But they are the ones that lead to better outcomes.

And they reflect a leadership style rooted in empathy and intention.

Finding Her Voice

At the Elms, Nouvelle also discovered her ability to connect with others through communication.

Encouraged by Mrs. Fippin, she became deeply involved in Speech and Debate and theatre. What began as participation quickly grew into excellence.

She earned a National Championship in Prose and Poetry, along with multiple State of Ohio titles.

But beyond the accolades, she developed something more lasting.

Confidence.
Clarity.
Presence.

Today, those same skills carry her across stages and audiences around the world. She speaks in small, focused settings and on national platforms, including Bloomberg Business, reaching millions.

Wherever she is, her ability to engage and connect remains central to her leadership.

A Path Defined by Purpose

Nouvelle’s academic and professional journey reflects both ambition and direction.

She earned her degree in international business and economics from New York University, graduating magna cum laude. She then pursued her legal education through The Ohio State University and Oxford University in England, earning her J.D. with honors.

Her career led her into international corporate law, where she built a reputation for thoughtful strategy, strong advocacy, and a deep understanding of the human side of business.

Today, as Founder and Managing Member of Gonzalo Law, she leads a firm serving businesses and nonprofits across the United States and internationally.

Her work is complex. The stakes are high.

But her approach remains grounded.

She listens.
She asks better questions.
She helps others move forward with clarity.

Leadership Rooted in Values

At the center of Nouvelle’s leadership is a strong moral foundation.

She often speaks about humility, the importance of using one’s gifts in the service of something greater, and leading with integrity.

These are not ideas she adopted later in life.

They were shaped early, through the example of teachers, mentors, and a community at the Elms that valued character as much as achievement.

Today, those values guide every aspect of her work.

Carrying the Elms Forward

In addition to her work in law, Nouvelle has served as adjunct faculty at the University of Florida Levin College of Law.

In the classroom, she emphasizes something she learned early on: education is not just about knowledge. It is about learning how to think.

Students must learn to analyze, to adapt, and to approach complex problems with confidence and creativity.

It is a mindset she first developed at the Elms.

Developing Women Leaders

Nouvelle’s story spans industries, countries, and conversations that shape real outcomes.

But at its core, her story is grounded in something steady.

A foundation built early.
A voice developed over time.
A commitment to leading with purpose.

At Our Lady of the Elms School, this is not by chance.

Students are encouraged to think deeply, speak confidently, and lead with integrity. They are given opportunities, challenged to grow, and supported along the way.

Nouvelle’s journey is one example of what happens when that foundation takes hold.

Women do not simply leave prepared.

They leave ready to lead.
